No. 25 City of London - Island ( series 3: City of London )

This started as a digital doodle on a rainy day. At the time I was reading about surrealism in the 1920s in the book Make It Modern by Brandon Taylor. I quite like that influences from 100 years ago seeped into such a modern day view as the City of London. It’s a very meaningful place for me because it’s where I spent a large proportion of my working life. I loved the tradition, the camaraderie, the history and the structure. Over my time there it was changing at a fast pace and now it’s expanding upwards at an accelerating speed.

The Square Mile has always had its own presence and is marked as apart in many ways including by the dragons standing guard at each of its entry points. In this piece of digital art I envisage it as an island.

The surrounding grey colour was taken from part of the sky and I’ve carried that forward into the rest of the series.
