Background story and Inspiration
My paintings are a mix of reality, memory and imagination based on my London surroundings. This one incorporates symbolic, abstract and photographic elements.
The building with the silver pyramid top is loosely based on One Canada Square or Canary Tower as it’s also known.
This is my second painting in this series. I was influenced by a colour palette used by Hans Hoffman in his abstract painting The Wind, 1942. At the time I was taking a drawing and painting course at Morley College. Our tutor Malina Busch suggested we look at Hans Hoffman’s paintings. I painted an abstract sketch using blue and silver which then prompted me to look more closely at what I had set out, a very rough outline of a building set against the U shape (as on a map) of the river. I often have visions I’d like to bring to life physically, which I can’t realise through photography, and this is one of them.
The symbolic elements in this painting are the building, the Thames as it curves around the Isle of Dogs, the full moon. Abstract elements are background building density, trees of south London looking across the river, clouds across the moon. Photographic elements are the long exposure speed trails of clipper boats racing along on the river.
